The Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces are located in the Ailao Mountains of Yuanyang County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. On June 22, 2013, at the 37th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, the cultural landscape of the Hani Rice Terraces was unanimously approved to be included in the 'World Heritage List'. The heritage area encompasses the representative and concentrated contiguous distribution of rice terraces and their dependent water source forests, irrigation systems, and ethnic villages. Within the territory of Yuanyang County, there are more than 170,000 mu of terraces, which are the landscape of mountains and fields carved out by the Hani people over more than 1,300 years. The Hani Rice Terraces scenic area features towering mountains with a V-shaped development, fragmented surface, and rugged and steep terrain. Where the slopes are gentle and the land is large, large fields are cultivated, and where the slopes are steep and the land is small, small fields are cultivated. Even the gaps between rocks on the edges of ditches are used for cultivation, resulting in terraces that range from several mu in size to as small as a dustpan, often with thousands of mu on a single slope. The Ailao Mountains have a variety of soil types, mainly strong-viscosity yellow and red soils, with fertile deep brown forest soils in between. The area has a high-temperature and rainy subtropical monsoon climate with a distinct vertical climate and frequent fog and rain. The main scenic areas of Yuanyang Rice Terraces include Bada scenic area (including Qingkou, Quanfuzhuang, Malizhai, Zhulu and other terraces), Laohuzui scenic area (including Mengpin, Dongpu, Amengkong, Baoshanzhai and other terraces), and Duoyishu scenic area (including Duoyishu, Aichun, Dawazhe and other contiguous terraces). From November to March, during the irrigation season, the cascading waters of the Yuanyang Rice Terraces reflect the blue sky, white clouds, mountains, and trees... like pieces of shimmering, gold-rimmed stained glass, spread across the embrace of Ailao Mountain. However... the perennial mist is the norm for Ailao Mountain; during the overcrowded Lunar New Year period, every viewing platform is completely packed. Finally, guided by locals, while hiking along the Azheke Rice Terraces to Duoyishu, I was incredibly lucky to capture the stunning mirror-like terraces. 📸Photo spots from February 1-2, 2025: ☀️Daytime, February 1 (Pictures 2-9): Azheke - Duoyishu (Rice Terrace Hike) ⛅️Sunset, February 1 (Pictures 10-11): Due to heavy traffic, I missed the sunset at Bada. Every inch of land flows with the magic of nature and the thousand-year-old wisdom of the Hani people, making one lose oneself in this dreamlike scenery. I. Preparation - Clothing: The temperature in Yuanyang in March is around 10–25°C. The temperature difference between day and night is significant, so bring warm clothes such as a jacket and a light sweater. Light clothing can be worn during the day. - Photography equipment: A wide-angle lens is used to shoot the grand panorama of the terraces, a telephoto lens captures details, and a tripod keeps the camera stable, which is especially crucial when shooting long exposures of sunrise and sunset. - Other items: Sunscreen (sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses), rain gear (occasional rain in March), and comfortable sneakers (for hiking). In March, Yuanyang is like a painter's palette overturned by nature 🎨, with colorful terraces shimmering under the sun, so beautiful it's hard to look away. If you also want to encounter this unique beauty, then follow this guide 👇 🚗 Getting There: - By Plane ✈️: You can first arrive at Kunming Changshui International Airport. As a transportation hub, Kunming has many routes, making it convenient for tourists from all over. From Kunming, transfer to a bus to Yuanyang. The bus ride from Kunming to Yuanyang takes about 5–6 hrs, and you can enjoy the scenery of Yunnan along the way. - By Train 🚄: If you have plenty of time, you can also choose to go to Kunming Railway Station first, and then transfer to a bus to Yuanyang.
