2025 Mount Hua Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in July)

| West Up, North Down! Not Tiring at All! Detailed Guide to Mount Hua Routes. Mount Hua has the most spectacular scenery among the Five Great Mountains Mount Hua is famous for its steepness. Hiking up from Yuquan Temple is quite challenging, so most tourists choose to take the cable car up to either the North or West Peak, then hike around all five peaks of Mount Hua before taking another cable car down. ⚠️If you want to climb all five peaks of Mount Hua with ease, I strongly recommend⚠️ going up from the West and down from the North. The West up, North down route is mostly downhill, making it feel much easier. The downside is that you won't be able to climb Canglong Ridge since it's one-way up only. My special itinerary: Stayed in Huayin the night before, went up Mount Hua early the next day, Mount Hua (West up, North down) → Yuquan Temple → West Mountain Temple → Guandi Temple → stayed in Huayin again that night. The fact that I still had energy to visit Yuquan Temple and other attractions in Huayin after coming down from Mount Hua proves that the West up, North down route isn't tiring! This post only covers Mount Hua; I'll update about other attractions in a future Weinan travel guide. See images 2-7 for the specific route. Here's my actual itinerary timeline: [0756] Arrived at Mount Hua East Gate [0810] Boarded the West Peak cable car shuttle bus (regardless of which cable car you take, you need to take a shuttle bus; West Peak and North Peak cable cars have different queues, so be careful not to line up in the wrong one) [0856] Arrived at the cable car lower station (yes, the West Peak shuttle bus takes over 40 minutes) [0909] Boarded the cable car [0923] Arrived at the West Peak cable car upper station [0929] Fork in the path (Image 8 shows a distant view, with the fork in the middle). To the right is West Peak (the highest point in Image 9). Since it was visible and crowded, and not the highest peak of Mount Hua, I skipped it. Going there and back would take about 20 minutes. [0955] South Peak [1018] Finished taking photos and left (South Peak was chaotic with photographers, unlike North Mountain which has railings for people to line up. You need to wait for the right moment to get a decent photo) [1030] Jintiangong [1038] South Heaven Gate [1040] Plank Walk queue (sign showed 3-4 hour wait time. Note: if you don't want to do the Plank Walk, you can still go see it by walking straight up, no queuing needed. Those famous dangerous Mount Hua photos you see online are taken here. I believe you go to visit Xi’an take the high speed train for 20 minutes to Huashan. The mountain is in the clouds. especially in the winter the mountain is covered in snow. You can take the cable ways but the hike it truly challenging. If you are fearless visit the plant bridge. Cable ways or no cable ways it’s at least a 4 hour hike to the peak of the mountain but don’t give up! it is worth it!!

My goal was to climb Dongfeng and watch the sunrise. To cut to the chase, it was cloudy so I couldn't see the sunrise. However, I was happy because I was able to see the beautiful scenery. I have good stamina and trekking is my hobby, so I liked walking all night, but it was steeper than I thought, so there were people crawling up on all fours, and there was a section where I had to climb up the wall, so I was scared..ㅎㅎ I was worried because I was trekking alone at night, but it was okay because there were many people trekking at night. In China, there’s a saying: 爬山涉水 (pá shān shè shuǐ), which means “to climb mountains and wade through rivers.”It’s a metaphor for enduring hardships and pushing through challenges to reach a beautiful outcome. Trekking feels the same to me. It tests you both physically and mentally. You endure the long trail, feel the fatigue, and yet—when you finally reach the top—there’s a deep sense of calm and peace as you take in the vastness. Getting There - Take high speed rail from xi’an to Huashan North station. 38 mins. Then take a didi from the station to the tourist centre to buy your bus and huashan tickets and cablecar tickets. Board the bus to bring you to the cable car station and take the car up to north or west peak and continue your hike there. If climbing from the base, do allow 4 hours to reach north peak and another 2-4 hours to reach all the other peaks. West cable car is closed in winter mths (November for me when i was there) but opened in summer (June when i came back)

I went to Huashan Mountain and had one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Hanging from the wooden planks was an incredible feeling, and the mountain was also very beautiful! I definitely recommend visiting it for anyone who is near Xian, even for those who don't like hiking! There are easier options to access the mountain, such as the cableway!

As someone who is scared of heights, this climb has definitely challenged my limits! It wasn't necessarily the tallest mountain I've summited, but it is definitely the steepest. Mount Hua offers multiple routes for aspiring hikers, the one we took was climbing up south, then down the north side. ✨This route is the easiest and most appropriate for beginner climbers as most of the hike is actually downhill. For hikers with experience I highly recommend taking the opposite route!✨ Along the way, there are multiple scary ridges and multiple peaks you can summit. On our way to the summit of all of them, we passed by multiple cliff kitties, interesting temples, as well as two via ferrata trails. ⚠️ Those via ferrata trails are NOT for the faint of heart! They look incredibly steep as you're basically walking on a wooden plant nailed to the side of a cliff...Proceed with plenty of caution if you're interested in them.⚠️ It took us about 5 hours to complete this hike, and I highly recommend taking the cable 🚠 car both ways. You can go on a one day trip but I decided to spend two nights in the downhill of the mountain. Tips: 1. the tickets are valid just for 1 day (not for 48 hours), 2. although is spring, the steps are slippery and covered in snow and ice-be carefull, 3. the easy hiking route to the West peak is clossed (there was no information of this online) so you can only take cable car up and down (depending on the route), 4. start early as possible (I was there at 7 and got on a first shuttle bus to cable car - on the parking of visitors centre where I bought a ticket), at 10 the crowds start to be a bit too much for me, 5. graduate students get 50% off ticket (have to show a student card).
