Wat Phan Tao, Chiang Mai

Wat Phan Tao is located on Phra Pok Klao Road, Phra Singh Subdistrict, near Wat Chedi Luang. It is an ancient temple. Originally, this temple was called Wat Pan Tao (Thousand Times), meaning that if you make merit once, you will receive merit in return a thousand times. However, it was later distorted to Phan Tao. In the past, this temple was also used to build a kiln to cast a thousand Buddha statues, so it was called Wat Phan Tao. Inside the temple, there is a royal chapel of Ho Kham Luang, which was originally the residence of King Mahotaraprades, the 5th ruler of Chiang Mai. Later, during the reign of King Inthawichayanon, he ordered the demolition of Ho Kham and offered it as the royal chapel of Wat Phan Tao. The entire teak house is still in the Chiang Saen style and has a wooden door arch carved in the shape of a peacock, which is a symbol of the northern princes. Behind the royal chapel of Ho Kham Luang is the principal chedi of the temple. It is bell-shaped on an octagonal base and surrounded by golden yellow chedis.
