Legend has it that if you eat one of these black eggs from Owakudani, your life will be extended by seven years. These eggs are boiled slowly in the gushing waters of Owakudani, which is also the source of the hot springs, and are characterized by their pitch black shells. Other than that, they are supposed to be normal boiled eggs, but when you try them, they have an addictive taste that will make you want to eat several. Among the many natural tourist spots in Hakone, Owakudani is as famous as Lake Ashi. It is a collapsed terrain formed by the eruption of the Hakone volcano about 3,000 years ago. Toxic gases and steam spew out from all over the place, proving that it is still an active volcano. It is also the source of Owakudani hot springs, which can be seen from the buildings and pipes installed in the valley.
