In Malacca, we wandered beyond Jonker Street’s bustle into narrow backlanes where murals bloomed on timeworn walls. A quiet kopitiam tucked into a shophouse served thick kaya toast and kopi that tasted richer in the slow morning heat. Outside, locals cycled by with baskets of market greens, unhurried by the day. 🚲🍞🎨 By afternoon, we drifted along Kampung Morten, a traditional Malay village where wooden stilt houses wore bright coats of paint. Chickens scratched in tiny gardens, and neighbours waved from verandas. Crossing a small bridge, we stumbled upon a makeshift stall selling chilled cendol topped with extra gula Melaka, perfect against the tropical sun. 🏠🌴🍧 As evening came, we skipped the river cruise and found a seat by the quay, feet dangling over the water, watching lanterns flicker to life across the facades. Nearby, a busker strummed old Malay songs, the notes drifting through warm air scented with satay smoke.
