One-Day Tour of Mexico City's Historic Center

Mexico City is a cultural treasure trove blending architecture, ruins, museums, and palaces. Its historic center was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987. ➡️The tour begins at the Plaza de la Constitución (Zócalo), the largest square in Latin America and one of the world's top ten plazas. This 240x240m (57,600㎡) stone-paved square features a giant Mexican flag at its center. ➡️On the east side stands the National Palace (Palacio Nacional), the presidential office. This has been Mexico's ruling palace since Aztec times, with Spanish-style courtyards and corridors adorned with murals depicting pre-colonial indigenous life. ➡️To the north lies the Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana), the largest and oldest cathedral in the Americas. Built over 240 years (1573-1813) on Aztec temple ruins, it blends Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles, housing treasures like the 18th-century gilded Altar of the Kings. ➡️East of the cathedral, behind the World Heritage plaque, are the ruins of the Templo Mayor. After Spaniards destroyed this Aztec temple in 1521, the cathedral was built atop it. The ruins were rediscovered in 1978 following the discovery of a moon goddess stone disc. ➡️750m west along Calle de Tacuba is the National Art Museum (Museo Nacional De Arte). Built in 1904, it combines Neoclassical and Neo-Baroque styles, featuring an imperial staircase and stunning glass dome that are artworks themselves. ➡️Opposite stands the Palacio Postal, an operational post office since 1907. Its exquisite staircases, opulent halls, and bustling mail services transport visitors back a century. You can mail postcards here. ➡️Further west is the Palacio de Bellas Artes, completed in 1934 with Neoclassical and indigenous fusion.
