Skopje, North Macedonia - A City of Contrasts

#getgoing2025 Visiting Skopje was a fascinating experience, filled with unexpected charm and unique contrasts. The city is a blend of modern ambitions and ancient history, with monumental statues and futuristic architecture coexisting alongside Ottoman-era mosques and traditional bazaars. I started my journey in Macedonia Square, where the towering statue of Alexander the Great dominates the scene. From there, I crossed the Stone Bridge, a timeless link between the city’s modern center and its historic Old Bazaar. The bazaar was one of my favorite places to explore—its narrow alleys were filled with colorful shops, the aroma of fresh pastries, and the sound of locals chatting over cups of strong Turkish coffee. For food, I highly recommend trying ajvar, a roasted red pepper spread, and tavče gravče, a traditional bean dish. Paired with fresh bread, it’s simple yet deeply satisfying. Wear comfortable shoes for exploring the uneven streets and give yourself plenty of time to take in the diverse sights. Skopje feels safe and welcoming, and the locals are always happy to share their city’s rich history and culture. This city, full of energy and contrasts, left me inspired and eager to return.
