2 Days in Suzhou – Classical Gardens, Maze Temples & a Taste of Old China

Spent two days in Suzhou, and honestly, it feels very different from other cities in China—in the best way possible. With its canals, stone bridges, and traditional houses, the city gives off real “Chinese Venice” vibes. I loved the mix of historical charm and relaxed pace. 🪨 Lion Grove Garden (狮子林) This place is like a giant stone maze, and it’s actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site! It’s full of winding paths, tunnels, and rock formations—super fun to explore, especially if you enjoy getting a little lost. Just a tip: try to go in the morning, because I went in the afternoon and it was quite crowded. 🌿 Humble Administrator’s Garden (拙政园) Absolutely gorgeous and huge, and guess what, IT IS ALSO A UNESCO World Heritage Site. It really feels like the pinnacle of Chinese classical garden design. Every corner is carefully arranged and full of detail—if you’re into architecture, landscaping, or photography, this is a must-see. 🛍 Pingjiang Road (平江路) This area is lively and great for souvenir hunting, with lots of local snacks, little shops, and riverside cafés. Warning though: prices can vary wildly—I bought the same item for 35 yuan, 10 yuan, and 4 yuan at different shops 😅. But if you wander into the narrower alleys nearby, it gets much quieter and you’ll find some great hidden photo spots. 📌 Pro Tip Reserve Suzhou Museum tickets online in advance—I didn’t, and by the time I tried, it was fully booked. Don’t make the same mistake! Suzhou is peaceful, charming, and full of culture. It’s the kind of place that slows you down—in a good way. A perfect getaway if you want a break from the fast pace of bigger cities.
