Step Into a Timeless Wonderland at Powis Castle and Garden, Welshpool, Powys

#cityplaybook There’s something truly magical about walking through the gates of Powis Castle—a place where history, nature, and quiet majesty all meet in perfect harmony. Nestled in the rolling hills of Welshpool, Powys, this magnificent medieval fortress-turned-stately home feels like stepping into a fairytale. I wasn’t prepared for just how captivating the whole experience would be. From the moment I set eyes on the terracotta-hued stone walls, perched dramatically above the valley, I knew this wasn’t just another historic site. The tiered Italianate gardens stole my heart—lush, vibrant, and immaculately maintained, they seem to tumble down the hillside like something from a dream. I visited in early May, and it was the perfect time. The wisteria was in full bloom, birdsong filled the air, and everything was alive with color and energy. If you're planning a trip, late spring through early summer offers the best of both worlds—beautiful weather and peak garden blooms. Inside the castle, centuries of stories are layered in every tapestry, painting, and creaking floorboard. You can sense the echoes of royalty and rebellion in the richly decorated rooms. The Clive Museum, housed within the castle, adds a fascinating twist with its collection of treasures from the East, providing a glimpse into colonial history that's both beautiful and thought-provoking. What truly set this place apart for me was the peacefulness. Even with other visitors around, there’s a calm serenity to the grounds. Don’t miss the deer park walk, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside—a perfect way to end the day.
