It is the coastal wind – the beautifully named alizee, or taros in Berber – that has allowed Essaouira (essa-weera, or es-sweera in Arabic) to retain its traditional culture and character. For most of the year, the wind blows so hard here that relaxing on the beach is impossible, meaning that the town is bypassed by the hordes of beach tourists who descend on other Atlantic Coast destinations in summer. Known as the ‘Wind City of Africa’, it attracts plenty of windsurfers between April and November, but the majority of visitors come here in spring and autumn to wander through the spice-scented lanes and palm-lined avenues of the fortified medina, browse the many art galleries and boutiques, relax in some of the country's best hotels and watch fishing nets being mended and traditional boats being constructed in the hugely atmospheric port. Essaouira lies on the crossroads between two tribes: the Arab Chiadma to the north and the Haha Berbers in the south. Add to that the Gnawa, who came originally from further south in Africa, and the Europeans, and you get a rich cultural mix.

#celebratewithtrip The city's skala and ramparts are one of the things you definitely need to explore when you visit Essaouira, built as a city defence on the ocean in the eighteenth century. There are two levels to this fortification you can check out. The ground level that was used as a military storage area, now filled with little shops selling handicrafts, souvenirs. The top levels have bronze cannons and great views out to the sea, harbour. Walking along this area, you will be transported to the scene Games of Thrones that was shot on this spot. Only sounds of the waves crashing against the fortress and the sound of the seagulls permeated through the air. It was absolutely magical.

#celebratewithtrip Essaouira Beach is a vast, golden sandy beach located just outside the old town. Kite and wind surfers appreciate the optimal wind and wave conditions of this bay. In between cafes and restaurants you are invited to take a break, offering food and drinks. You can rent surfboards or beach chairs at one of the counters, activities like horseback riding, camel rides, quad tours can also be arranged. A real highlight is also the 5 kilometers long beach promenade, which encants with a magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean. Locals and tourists stroll up and down here, enjoying the view and watching the lively beach life, people dancing and playing along the promenade and beach.

#celebratewithtrip Place Moulay Hassan is one of the most beautiful squares in between the port and the medina in Essaouira. Vendors selling their handicrafts in the square, groups of friends and families with their children stroll around there, with their children chasing pigeons and cats around there. View of the sea, there are cafes and restaurants around there, i visited Bab Laachour for my lunch, Bolognese Spaghetti and Prawn Omelette. At the end of the square, there are fish market stalls that are pretty much selling the same things, only you need to choose which one is fresher and cheaper.

It is a coastal town in Morocco famous with its old port with blue boats - however we did not find them even kept looking for them, so we decided to see some other places around the town that I am now attaching in this post. During my three-day stay in Marrakech, I decided to explore another city and visited "Essaouira." This UNESCO World Heritage site is just a day trip away from Marrakech and offers a completely different atmosphere, making it a highly recommended destination. Here’s a guide to getting from Marrakech to Essaouira and some recommended spots to check out! ▪️ Tickets from Marrakech to Essaouira I booked my ticket through "Get Your Guide" for 1,800 yen. Another option is to use one of the tour companies in Marrakech. If you’ve walked around the city, you’ll know that Marrakech is full of aggressive touts. There are plenty of tour companies, so booking through them is also possible. You might even be able to negotiate a discount, so it’s worth listening to their offers. 🎀 However, from what I observed, "Get Your Guide" seemed to be cheaper. Plus, the ability to pay by credit card is a convenient feature (many city tours require cash payments). "Get Your Guide" allows for next-day reservations, so you can check prices while sightseeing in Marrakech and book whichever option is cheaper. 😊 ▪️ Getting from Marrakech to Essaouira The journey from Marrakech to Essaouira takes about three hours by car 🚌. It’s a comfortable ride, and although I forgot to take pictures, the van was a sturdy 10-seater with plush seats. 😊 If you prefer not to join a tour, you can also travel individually by bus. The tour I joined included a stop at an argan oil workshop, where we enjoyed tea, sampled argan oil, observed the production process, and had some shopping time (about 20 minutes). ✨ Argan oil is a high-quality oil that can only be sourced in Morocco, and learning about it was fascinating (the explanations were in English or French). There was no pressure to buy anything, so if you don’t want to spend money, you can simply enjoy the experience. (I wanted to buy some oil but had to give up since I was traveling with carry-on luggage only 🥲). ⚠️ The famous goats that climb argan trees are often featured in tour photos, but not all tours include this sight. If seeing the goats is a must for you, make sure to check the itinerary carefully when booking through apps or confirm directly with the tour company. 🐐 ▪️ Recommended Spots in Essaouira The tour allowed for about five hours of free time in Essaouira. While this includes time for lunch, the main attractions are concentrated in a small area, so five hours was more than enough. 🧚 Essaouira is surrounded by city walls, and the old town (Medina) within the walls features a stunning blue-and-white color scheme that’s perfect for photos. As a UNESCO World Heritage site and popular tourist destination, the town is filled with restaurants and souvenir shops. However, the local market offers a more authentic experience, with vegetables sold in the open air and whole pigs hanging outside shops, giving you a true taste of the exotic. Since it’s a port town, I highly recommend trying the seafood! Essaouira has also served as a filming location for popular Netflix series like Outer Banks and Game of Thrones. 😳 ⚠️ Like Marrakech, the side streets can feel like a maze, so if you get lost, aim for the main street to find your way. 📍 Pâtisserie Driss Location: 10 Rue Hajjali, Essaouira, Morocco The sign outside says "1928," suggesting it’s been around for quite a while. Intrigued, I decided to step inside. The shop is filled with unique sweets you won’t find in Japan, all at affordable prices. Despite their appearance, the desserts weren’t overly sweet and were surprisingly easy to eat! It’s a popular spot with plenty of reviews on Google Maps, which is rare for Morocco. ✨ 💰 ~50 dirhams (~775 yen) ⚠️ The restroom requires a fee, so make sure to carry some coins. 📍 Essaouira Fishing Port Location: G65G+QV8, Essaouira, Morocco The sight of countless blue boats lined up is breathtaking! Turn around, and you’ll see the city wall gates behind you. It’s a place where you can truly feel the history of Essaouira. The market sells fresh fish, and while the smell might be strong, it’s a spot you shouldn’t miss. 📍 City Walls On top of the city walls, you can enjoy views of the ocean and see cannons and what appear to be watchtowers. All of this is free to explore, but as part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, these structures are undoubtedly valuable. During sunset, the area reportedly gets crowded. ☀️ Once you’ve seen the main attractions, take a leisurely stroll around the charming town until your tour ends. ☺️

When you come to Morocco, you must visit Essaouira on the Atlantic Ocean. Here’s why 👇🏻 1. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. 2. In 2012, the ancient city was selected by CNN Travel as one of the top ten most beautiful small towns in the world. 3. Due to its geographical location, it has become a famous windsurfing center in Morocco and has earned the reputation of "African Wind City". Essaouira means "little picture", "well-designed" or "picturesque" in Arabic. In fact, as its name suggests, although the city is small in size, it attracts many photographers and filmmakers every year to shoot pictures with its beautiful natural harbor and sea views. Although history books indicate that records of the city date back to the 1700s, the town's history is much older than that. As early as the 15th century, the Portuguese, who invaded one of the Moroccan coasts, had already built a huge stone wall here, a fortress that still surrounds the medina today. After the Moroccans finally recovered the lost territory, in 1764 Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah (also known as Mohammed III, c. 1710-1790) moved to the town then known as Mogador (meaning Little Fortress). He hired French architect Théodore Cornut to start rebuilding it, creating a mixture of European and Moroccan styles. The city slowly enjoyed its golden age as merchants from Europe, Jews and British traders settled there. "Essaouira is the only Arab city where the majority of its inhabitants were once Jewish" The Sultan then named the city "Essaouira". However, after the French established their colony in Morocco, they changed the town's name back to Mogador. It was not until the 1960s that the city regained its name. However, even now, you will often see the name "Mogador" next to this city. The Jewish community contributed greatly to her development. At the time, the Jewish community comprised 40 percent of the city’s population. When Israel was founded in 1948, this area was almost lost as a Jewish habitat. Today, visitors can still visit the two synagogues and the Jewish cemetery.
