Spanning an area of 1.2 hectares, the site was equipped with a steel-structured protective roof in 2010. Elevated walkways allow visitors to explore the site comfortably, shielded from the sun and rain. The site has been inhabited since 4000 BCE and reached its peak around 2000 BCE. It was once a maritime and copper trade hub in the Aegean Sea, boasting advanced architectural techniques. In the 17th century BCE, a massive volcanic eruption on Santorini buried the entire city under six meters of volcanic ash. the akrotiri archaeological site is incredible to witness it is one of greece’s biggest archaeological finds. the site is enclosed in a glass-top building for preservation. it is the ruins from the minoan period believed to be dating back to 4000 bc. it was or have been a huge trading center because a wide variety of artifacts and pottery have been discovered and no bodies was found. the village people took off with their possessions before the city was covered and preserved in volcanic ash therefore there was no trace of human bodies, just the city. #greece #akrotiri #archaeology
