I had such a great time in Auckland—there was so much to see and do! Visiting Hobbiton was definitely a highlight; seeing the iconic movie set in real life was incredible. Exploring Auckland’s city centre was just as fun, with great food, stunning waterfront views, and plenty of hidden gems to discover. Then, heading over to Waiheke Island was the perfect way to unwind, beautiful beaches, amazing wineries, and the most breathtaking coastal scenery. Going here is so easy with local bus you can buy the tiket at the ferry station and each time you enter the busy are about 1.5NZD. About the vineyard, even though it wasn’t in season, but the view are still stunning, the restaurant itself are covered with vines and looks classic,it has two parts of the restaurant which is inside and outside (are bars) but outside wasn’t open by the time I was there as probably because of the rain. Other than the restaurant, they also allow you to have wine tasting over there.

If many people only stay on the island for one day, this is the first place they think of. Their wines come not only from Waiheke, but also from Marlborough and Central Otago, and the quality is very high. I recommend you try a few wines in their wine cellar, choose a bottle you like, and then go to the terrace to order some snacks while watching the sea and drinking. It is really a great experience. The outdoor seating area is definitely one of the highlights. Looking out, you can see the entire vineyard, and in the distance there is the glittering sea view. Sitting here, you really don’t want to leave. The whole atmosphere is very relaxed and textured, and the seats are very comfortable, perfect for spending an entire afternoon there. The lamb chops were so delicious that I almost applauded. I was still not satisfied after eating one portion, so I ordered another one 😋 and paired it with their white wine, it was perfect. The baijiu was so delicious that I bought a lot of it on the spot and brought several bottles back to Taiwan. Now every time I take a sip of it, I think of the sea breeze in Waiheke.

I booked the Fullers 360 package, which includes ferry tickets and hop-on-hop-off double-decker bus tickets. It's the perfect way to explore the island at your own pace. The buses are air-conditioned, and sitting on the upper deck offers panoramic views of the island. Our driver was fantastic! His commentary about Waiheke's history, wine culture, and local lifestyle was so engaging that we didn’t want to get off the bus. After wine tasting, you can conveniently hop back on the bus to return to the ferry terminal, avoiding the hassle of driving yourself. Tip: Take an early ferry to make the most of your day. If possible, opt for the ferry ticket that includes the shuttle bus—it’s definitely worth it. My husband and I talked about this trip for days afterward and decided we’ll definitely return! Also, the ferry ticket suggests arriving at the terminal an hour early. We planned to take the 9 AM ferry but arrived at 8:20 AM, just in time to catch the delayed 8 AM ferry, which departed at 8:35 AM. We were lucky to board an earlier ferry, but it’s unclear if such delays affect other time slots.

I wanted to spend some leisurely time alone, so I went on a winery tour to Waiheke Island. Although I was traveling alone, it was a richer and more special experience. I will summarize the day. 1. Beautiful scenery and a perfect start I was excited from the moment I took the morning ferry from Auckland to Waiheke Island. The clear blue sea and the island scenery I saw from the ferry already gave me healing. As soon as I arrived on the island, I was immersed in the fresh air and leisurely atmosphere. 2. Winery tour Because I was alone, I was able to choose the wineries I wanted more freely, and here are my impressions of each winery: • Mudbrick Vineyard The first place I visited was Mudbrick Vineyard, the most famous on the island. The luxurious winery building and garden, as well as the view of Waiheke at a glance, were impressive. I enjoyed tasting Pinot Gris and Chardonnay and reading a book in the peaceful garden. • Cable Bay Vineyards The second stop, Cable Bay, was a place that stood out with its modern interior and wide lawn. Here, I enjoyed a small platter with rose while taking in the island scenery. It was a perfect moment that was not awkward even if I was alone. • Tantalus Estate The last place I visited, Tantalus Estate, had a different, sophisticated and luxurious atmosphere. I could feel the deep flavor of red wine, and thanks to the friendly explanations of the staff, I had time to learn a little more about wine. 3. Leisurely time alone The best thing about going alone was that I could fully enjoy the winery at my own pace. I tasted wine, looked at nature, heard the laughter of people around me, and quietly enjoyed the island atmosphere. I was worried that traveling alone would be lonely, but the conversations with the staff and the short greetings with people on the same tour actually made me feel warm. 4. Walking through a small village on the island After the winery tour, I walked around Oneroa village and enjoyed a cup of coffee at a local cafe. In the cute shops and artistic atmosphere, I could feel a different charm from the winery. 5. Overall Review The Waiheke Island winery tour that I went on alone was the perfect ‘gift for myself’. It was a day where I could enjoy my own leisure time and leisurely experience the beautiful island scenery and high-quality wine. The food plating and presentation is lovely and all items included some flowers, complementing the garden setting of the main seating area at the back of the cafe. It’s a little oasis of cool and calm that you would not be able to tell if you just walked past the shopfront, so I was glad to have finally experienced it for myself after hearing much of this place.
