The beach is free to enter, and it’s easy to spend the whole day just lounging, swimming, and soaking up the sun. The shallow waters make it perfect for families, and you can walk across the lagoon to a small islet that feels like your own private beach. 🌊 We also explored the Elafonisi Nature Reserve, where the dunes and rare plants create a unique landscape. The area is a protected habitat for loggerhead turtles, so it’s important to be respectful of the environment while you’re there. Just a short drive away, the Chrysoskalitissa Monastery is perched on a hill with breathtaking views of the sea—definitely worth a visit! When visiting Greece, beyond Santorini, there’s one place you simply can’t miss. This island holds myths, ruins, wars, and the origins of civilization—all at once. The Minotaur truly lived here, the flying boy really fell into the sea, and German paratroopers met their defeat here—Crete is the real-life stage of legends. 🏛️【The Minotaur × The Labyrinth × The Legend of the Minotaur】 King Minos of Crete prayed to Poseidon for a sacred white bull, but when it appeared, he couldn’t bear to sacrifice it and secretly replaced it. Enraged, Poseidon made the queen fall in love with the bull. She even hid inside a wooden cow crafted by Daedalus to mate with it, eventually giving birth to the Minotaur—a half-man, half-bull monster. To conceal this, the king ordered Daedalus to build an inescapable labyrinth to imprison the creature. Later, Athens was forced to send seven boys and seven girls every nine years as sacrifices. In June 2024, my family and I embarked on a week-long self-driving trip to Crete, Greece, filled with surprises and challenges. Eastern Warmth: Leisurely Days Under the Scorching Sun For the first three days, we stayed at Creta Blue Boutique Hotel & Suites in the eastern part of the island. Crete greeted us with blazing heat, with temperatures soaring to 42°C, but the hotel's cozy ambiance and pool offered a refreshing escape. Despite the sweltering weather, the laid-back charm of the east helped us ease into island life. Western Wilderness: The Allure of Hidden Beaches For the next three days, we moved to the town of Kissamos in the west, staying at Kallistefan. Its biggest perk? Proximity to the famous Balos Beach. The winding, rugged mountain road to Balos tested our driving skills, but the breathtaking view—pristine sands and turquoise waters—made every bump worth it. It’s a must-visit spot in Crete. Beyond Balos, we also ventured to the legendary pink sand beach. The journey there was equally long and mountainous, but the stunning scenery along the way made every twist and turn a visual feast. Stepping onto the faintly pink-hued sand left us in awe of nature’s magic. Overall, despite the heat and challenging mountain roads, Crete’s self-driving adventure was incredibly rewarding, thanks to its unique beaches and spectacular landscapes.

#getgoing2025 The waters separating the island from Crete are both exceptionally clear and shallow which helps makes them warm and safe. Such inviting waters and stunning surroundings have unfortunately made Elafonsi beach a bit of a must see and it summer it gets busy. The good news though is that you can easily escape the wall-to-wall sun beds by wading across the knee deep shallows of the lagoon to the island itself. Here you will find a sun-lounger free zone and a protected wildlife reserve too. There are several little beaches and coves on Elafonisi island and the further you walk, the quieter it gets.

Chania is a city on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Crete. It’s famous for its 14th century Venetian Harbour. The city old town is well worth a visit and is crammed full of souvenir shops, cafés and restaurants. There are some beautiful beaches close to the city but why not hire a car and take the time to visit some of the famous beaches on the West Coast of Crete such as Balos Beach, Elafonisi beach, famous for its pink sand and Falassarna beach? Right from a Laid-back beachgoers to those seeking adrenaline, Elafonissi offers an array of activities and spectacular scenery. The pink sand and mountainous backdrop will keep for stunning pictures. Those who love watersports get to enjoy surfing, kiteboarding, or windsurfing. And once you've worked up an appetite, head to one of the local tavernas for a plate of dakos — a local specialty of crisp bread topped with a mix of fresh tomatoes, mizithra cheese, olive oil, and herbs.

The entrance fee was just €2, making it a great stop for both your budget and your soul. Climbing the 98 steps up to the monastery, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of peace. Legend has it that one of the steps is made of gold, visible only to the pure of heart. The monastery itself is beautiful, with whitewashed walls, a small museum, and stunning sea views that make the climb worth it. Inside, the icons and religious artifacts give you a glimpse into the deep spiritual history of the place. After visiting the monastery, I headed to the famous Elafonissi Beach, just a 10-minute drive away, where the pink sand and crystal-clear waters were the perfect way to end the day.
