Longxing Temple is located at the western foot of Jinshan Mountain in Linhai City. It was built in the first year of Shenlong in Tang Dynasty (705), and its initial name was "Shenlong Temple". In the second year (706), it was renamed "Zhongxing". In the third year of Jinglong (709), it was renamed "Longxing". In the twenty-sixth year of Kaiyuan (738), it was renamed "Kaiyuan". The archway at the entrance of Longxing Temple reads "Shenlong Ancient Temple". In short, Longxing Temple has a history of nearly 1,300 years. The temple was destroyed during the Anti-Japanese War, leaving only the Thousand-Buddha Pagoda built in the Tang Dynasty, which is a provincial cultural relic protection unit. Linhai Longxing Temple played an extremely important role in promoting the Tiantai School of Chinese Buddhism. During the Tang Tianbao period, Master Jianzhen traveled eastward to Fusang six times to spread the Dharma. Before his fourth eastward travel to Japan, he lived here in Xixi. Si Tuo, an eminent monk from Longxing Temple, followed Master Jianzhen to "build a boat four times and enter the sea five times", "always six times for over twelve years", and became the first eminent monk from Taizhou to go to Japan. After monk Jianzhen traveled eastward to Kyushu, Japan for the sixth time, Sito assisted Master Jianzhen in establishing the world-famous Tang Zhaoti Temple in Japan, and wrote "The Great Monk Jianzhen Biography". After Jianzhen passed away, Sito also made a statue of Jianzhen with dry lacquer and core. While spreading Vinaya in Japan, Sito actively promoted the teachings of the Tiantai religion founded in Taizhou, and received ordination for 40 people below the emperor, which opened the door for Japanese monks to enter the Tang Dynasty to seek Dharma.
