Walk along the shore of Kanemori Warehouse in the direction of Mt. Hakodate Cable Car, and slowly go up Hachimanzaka Slope to reach the Motomachi Foreigners Church area. Yasaka Slope is a gentle slope with a stone slab surface and red leaves planted on both sides. Looking ahead is the Hakodate Harbor, which is a picturesque scenery. There are many churches for foreigners in the Motomachi area: the Russian Orthodox Church with a white base and blue roof that looks like a fairy tale house; the Anglican Church with a white base and red roof that looks like a cross-shaped hat; and the Roman Catholic Cathedral with traditional Gothic architecture. Heading towards Motomachi Park, you will pass by the oldest Funama Shrine in Hokkaido. The torii at the entrance is said to be made of warship materials. On one side of the park is the #OldHakodateCitizens'Association, which is full of European colonial style. The whole building is decorated in gold and blue, elegant and gorgeous. It was once the residence of Crown Prince Taisho when he came to Hakodate. At the Asaichi Shokudo in front of the station, lively squids 🦑 are swimming around swiftly, as if they are about to jump out of the tank at any moment. After wondering what to eat, I ordered scallops grilled with butter and soy sauce 🧈 and a seafood bowl. Fresh as you would expect from Hokkaido! At Motomachi Park at the foot of Mt. Hakodate, there are many cute objects lined up. If you stop by, be sure to look for them. 2025.5 ⛴ Motomachi Hills and Churches I was impressed by the exotic cityscape. The gradation of the port and sky seen from the top of the hill was like a scene from a movie. 🌸 Goryokaku Park The moat and greenery surrounding the star-shaped castle were beautiful, and just taking a walk soothed my heart. The stone walls and waterside that give you a sense of history, and in spring and autumn the cherry blossoms and autumn leaves would look even more beautiful! The children had a great time in the large park, and we had a relaxing time. 📌 No matter where we walked or where we took pictures, it was a trip that made us think, "Hakodate is amazing!" Last June and September, I visited Hakodate, but the cherry trees were already covered in green leaves, leaving me with a slight sense of regret. This year, I decided to visit during the cherry blossom season, and it was truly worth it! From the weeping cherry blossoms at Hokkeji Temple, the cherry blossom-lined paths along the Ono River, Trappistine Monastery, Kosetsuen Garden, and Hakodate Park (night blossoms!), to Goryokaku Park and Sakuragaoka Street, I took over 500 photos in total. Although it was tiring for my partner and a bit exhausting for me as well, it was an unforgettable experience!

If you like history then I highly recommend visiting Hakodate which is full of history and awesome places to see in the city.

Every time I go to a place, I will learn about its relevant history. Hakodate, formerly known as Hakodate, is located in the south of Hokkaido. It is one of the first three international trade ports in Japan, along with Yokohama and Nagasaki, and they were opened at the same time. I have finally set foot in all three trade ports. They all have exotic atmospheres but different characteristics (Nagasaki will be shared in the Kyushu section), and the areas around Hachimanzaka and Motomachi Park are full of exotic buildings. These buildings are all on the slope at the foot of Mt. Hakodate, so the view is particularly open (foreigners really appreciate it). Hachimanzaka and the tram passing by give it a cinematic feel, but there are cars on the road, so be careful not to disturb others when taking photos. Near Motomachi Park are the old British Consulate, Hakodate Orthodox Church, Anglican Church, etc., as well as Japanese-style mansions. Because Hokkaido is closer to Russia, this is the first time I have seen an Orthodox church. We were just wandering around in this area, but I felt so proud. I went to Motomachi Park in Hakodate, Hokkaido. It's on a slight hill, so you can see the cityscape and the sea. The former Hokkaido Prefectural Government Hakodate Branch Office building is located in the park, and the building stands out against its pale green color.
