Nestled deep in the forests of Aomori Prefecture, Oirase Gorge offers one of Japan’s most breathtaking natural landscapes. Stretching over 14 kilometers from Lake Towada to Yakeyama, the gorge is a haven of cascading waterfalls, mossy rocks, and towering beech and maple trees. I visited in autumn, and the fiery reds and golds of the leaves created a surreal, almost storybook-like setting.
The walking trail that runs alongside the Oirase Stream is well-maintained and relatively flat, making it accessible for most visitors. The sound of rushing water, rustling leaves, and birdsong accompanied me throughout the journey. Waterfalls like Choshi Otaki and Ashura no Nagare are highlights, each offering a moment of awe and reflection. Even during busy seasons, the gorge never felt overcrowded—just peaceful and restorative.
There are frequent rest areas and small viewing points, perfect for photography or simply taking in the beauty of the moment. I recommend starting early in the day to avoid crowds and allow time to linger at the more scenic spots. For those less inclined to hike the full length, buses run between key points, making it easy to tailor your experience.
Getting to Oirase Gorge requires some planning—it’s about a two-hour journey from Aomori city or Hachinohe—but the effort is absolutely worth it. Whether you're an avid hiker, a nature lover, or someone simply seeking quiet beauty, Oirase Gorge delivers in every way. It’s not just a place you see, but one you feel—and it left me with a deep sense of calm and gratitude.
Tip: Visit in mid to late October for peak autumn foliage, and bring a light jacket—it gets chilly in the shade even on sunny days.#japan#aomori
