[Shiga🇯🇵] To the remote island of Lake Biwa, "Okishima"🌊
Okishima, Omihachiman City, Shiga Prefecture - Japan's only remote island where people live on a freshwater lake. This island has a long history, having provided stone for the Seta River and Lake Biwa Canal, and there is a story of how the descendants of samurai built their lives here.
🌸1. Enjoy the spectacular views and nature on the lake
•After a 10-minute boat ride from Horikiri Port, you can get off on the island and enjoy a view of the eastern shore of Lake Biwa and the Hira mountain range.
•From the slightly elevated "Okishima Observatory" and near the torii gate of Benzaiten Shrine, you can enjoy a luxurious view of the lake, cherry blossoms, and mountains.
⛩️2. Sacred sites where history and faith live
•A stroll around ancient scenic spots such as Okutsushima Shrine, founded in 712, Saifukuji Temple, associated with Renyo, which has a long history in the Muromachi period, and Benzaiten (Itsukushima Shrine) is soothing.
•There is an episode in which the island was developed by defeated warriors of the Genji clan in the Heian period, giving you a sense of historical romance unique to the island.
🚲3. Experience the life of the islanders
•Cars are prohibited on the island, and tricycles are the only way to get around. Walking through narrow alleys and immersed in the laughter of people having gossiping is an extraordinary experience.
•At the fishing port, you can enjoy local lake fish dishes such as funazushi, moroko, and Biwamasu. We also recommend the Fisheries Hall and cafes such as "Tei no Sei" and "Ippukudo."
🐱4. Relaxing time with cats
•It was once known as the "Cat Island" by world-renowned photographer Mitsuaki Iwago, and you might encounter friendly cats near the port. It's a soothing island.
•The circumference of the island is about 6.8 km, and it takes 30 to 40 minutes on foot. We recommend renting a tricycle or going at a leisurely pace.
