Downstairs is the former British Consulate Gardens, filled with centuries-old trees and virtually no tourists, making it feel like the hotel's private green space. It's perfect for taking children on a botanical exploration and letting them run and play freely. Also nearby is the Rockbund, a newly developed area with historic buildings that once housed consulates. It now boasts a mix of churches, art centers, bookstores, coffee shops, and restaurants. From this perspective on Zhapu Road Bridge, the Oriental Pearl Tower looks beautiful. On the other side is the Shanghai Postal Museum. Expect to spend around 1 hour only inside, a drink is offered on entry at the ‘club’ of red wine or mulled wine (no other choices unfortunately). The rooms are creative and you can have fun inside, it’s also incredibly insightful on alcohol in general. There are rows of red brick buildings, small streets full of cafes and galleries, and every corner is as mellow as a scene from a Western movie. The highlight of Rockbund is the Art Deco style buildings and the warm colors of red, grey and white bricks, which are very beautiful when photographed, whether you wear a sweet dress or a cool minimalist outfit.
