I work as a fisherman in Lingshui
This trip to Hainan allowed me to experience a different kind of fisherman's life.
One day in Lingshui, I booked a "Danjia Fishing Raft Sea Homestay" which is indeed different from other hotels in Hainan.
It changed the whole vibe of the trip, haha.
First, I took a taxi to the pier, but once there, I didn't know how to get to the homestay. Later, someone from the homestay said they would pick us up at the pier. We looked for the boarding spot for quite a while, worried about getting it wrong.
Finally, we got on the boat, and for the first time, I experienced what it felt like to be a Southeast Asian stowaway. Their boats all look like the fishing boats from Hong Kong movies, which was another amazing experience.
After a while, we arrived at the homestay, which is also floating on the sea.
In the afternoon, we didn't have much to do, so we tried sea fishing. Right in one of the rooms of the homestay, we removed a few floorboards and could fish directly. You could see the fish swimming below in the very clear water, like a glass sea. But sea fishing is quite difficult; it's not that easy to catch fish. We didn't catch anything on the first day, but the next day, our kid went fishing on her own and actually caught one, which was pretty impressive.
The weather at sea is also unpredictable. In the afternoon, dark clouds gathered and it rained for half an hour, but by evening the weather cleared up, and we could go clamming.
Clamming was so much fun. The beach behind the homestay was directly accessible for clamming, which was very convenient. Just grab a bucket and tools and go. But don't expect to find sea urchins on this beach; you have to rent a boat to go out for those. This area mostly has starfish and small crabs. There were so many starfish, you couldn't pick them all. We collected a bucketful, but in the end, we kept some of the bigger ones and returned all the small ones to the sea. (The starfish can be cooked, dried, and taken on the plane).
The next day after breakfast, we could pull up the fish traps. Fish traps are nets that fishermen set in the sea in advance to catch small shrimp and crabs. The kids really enjoyed this activity, and we caught a small bucket of crabs, although we ended up releasing them. Lastly, there was a rowing activity, but the weather was very sunny, and rowing was just too hot.
Although the homestay is quite expensive during the peak season, it was still very satisfying to fulfill the kids' wish to go clamming, and we were very happy.
