This is one of the five major Zen forests in Fujian, with a history of over 1000 years, witnessing the changes of six dynasties. Walking outside the Zen courtyard, you can see the lush litchi trees from the Song Dynasty, full of fruits. It is recommended to go to the third floor with the stairs of the main hall, where you can see the panoramic view of the ancient temple, echoing with the distant high-rise buildings, which has a unique charm. 🚗 Route: You can take a taxi to Xichan Temple, the bus stop is also named Xichan Temple, it is not recommended to take the subway as it is not very convenient. 🎫 Ticket price: 20RMB, half price for students and the elderly. 🕙 Time: 7:00-18:00 (stop admission at 16:30) ⚠️ Tips: The ancient temple provides incense for free, you can donate merits. Xichan Temple, founded in the Tang Dynasty, was named Changqing Temple during the Five Dynasties and has been used ever since. Because there were Zen temples in all directions in Fuzhou in the old days, Changqing Temple was located in the western suburbs, so it was commonly known as "Xichan Temple". And Zen, Buddha said "the original face, the nirvana wonderful heart", is the method of becoming enlightened by seeing the nature in tranquility. Xichan Temple has been burned and rebuilt over the centuries, and the existing layout is slightly different from that of general temples. Entering the mountain gate, there is a nine-curved bridge with the layout of Jiangnan garden and a solemn and compassionate giant Guanyin statue. The silhouette of the Baoen Pagoda is faintly visible in the release pond, and under the cover of the pine forest and lychee trees is the solemnity of the Buddha Hall and dining hall. Walking along the nine-curved bridge, crossing the arch bridge, is like crossing the Naihe Bridge and saying goodbye to the past. When the cicadas are singing and the lychees are ripe, eating three hundred lychees a day in the Zen temple, in addition to the sweetness that flows into the mouth, there is also the Buddha's intention that seeps into the heart. The thousand-year-old lychee tree has witnessed the ups and downs of Xichan Temple and also understood the Buddha's nature of a thousand years. As one of the national key temples as well as the first of the five Buddhist temples in Fuzhou City, Xichan Temple has been stood for over 1130 years and underwent natural disasters and warring damages in its long-term development since built in 867 of Tang Dynasty (618-907). This is a very nice place to visit in the city, it has many temples inside with a big lake in the middle and many trees and benches to sit and relax. The entrance ticket is very cheap, only 20 CNY. It was the only place we have to pay for. All the attraction in the city are for free.

The Five Hundred Arhats Hall, built in 1993, is a five-story structure and the largest building in the temple complex. Xichan Temple is Fuzhou's most imperial-style ancient temple, not only due to its vast area but also because of its uniformly golden glazed tile roofs, which closely resemble those of the Forbidden City. The combination of red and yellow colors is unconventional yet exudes grandeur. Surrounded by white stone railings, the entire hall is adorned in red and yellow hues. Four circular stone pillars at the front are carved with giant dragons, while the spaces between the four stone steps feature intricate dragon carvings on single stone blocks with smooth lines. Inside, numerous Arhat statues display diverse postures, each vividly lifelike. The hall also houses a vast collection of Buddhist scriptures and cultural relics. The Arhats Hall is a majestic architectural complex dedicated to the worship of Tathagata Buddha and celestial deities. Comprising six floors with one main hall and two side halls, it stands as the most magnificent structure in the temple. The main hall features a 4-meter-tall statue of Tathagata Buddha, while 500 Arhats are distributed across six levels, each with unique expressions and postures—some laughing heartily, others stern-faced, some benevolent, some authoritative, standing, meditating, leaping, or reclining—no two are alike. Visitors can ascend to the top via internal staircases; reaching the fifth floor offers panoramic views of both the ancient temple and urban cityscape.

The last stop in Fuzhou is Xichan Temple on Yishan Mountain, filled with the strong scent of incense. This place is also known for its "Song Dynasty lychee" culture. Ancient people said: "Fujian lychees are the best in the world, and Xichan lychees are the best in Fujian." Temple Introduction Also known as Changqing Temple, it is located on Yishan Mountain in the western suburbs of Fuzhou and is one of the five major Chan Buddhist monasteries in Fujian. In 1983, it was designated as a key Han Buddhist monastery in China. The current abbot is Venerable Zhao Xiongda. In 865 CE (the sixth year of Xiantong in the Tang Dynasty), Master Da'an came to reside here and revitalized the temple. The monastery has a long history and has produced many eminent monks, starting from Master Da'an in the Tang Dynasty, followed by Chan Master Huiling during the Five Dynasties period, Masters Huixian and Dingxu in the Song Dynasty, Chan Masters Kongyin and Weimiao in the Qing Dynasty, Chan Master Zhishui during the Republic of China era, and Chan Master Mingyang in modern times—all were distinguished monks of their generations. The temple complex is spacious with corridors, pavilions, and elegant ancient structures throughout. It contains over 40 buildings including the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Grand Hall of the Great Hero, the Dharma Hall, the Sutra Library, the Guanyin Pavilion, the Hall of Three Saints of Avatamsaka, the Gratitude Pagoda, and others, covering more than 200 mu (about 33 acres) of land. Important cultural relics include the "Tang Dynasty Record of the True Body in the Pagoda of Great Master Yansheng of Fuzhou Yanshou Chan Monastery" unearthed in 1952, the Seven Star Well, the Five Dynasties period reliquary pagoda of Chan Master Huiling, the Yuan Dynasty stone drum, and the Qing Emperor Kangxi's imperial calligraphy of the "Medicine Buddha Sutra."
