The first visit was in early April last year for two days, and I knew I had to return when I left. Finally succeeded in making another solo trip! 📝First Trip Itinerary (2-day schedule) ✅Day 1 Route: Huayan Temple ➡️ Datong Museum ➡️ Yungang Grottoes 🚄 Transport: Took high-speed train from Beijing North Station to Datong South Station (about 2 hours), same route for return. 🔹 Huayan Temple: One of China's earliest and best-preserved Liao and Jin dynasty temple complexes, ticket 50 RMB. Joined a group tour at the entrance, 15 RMB per person for 10 people, very cost-effective～ 🔹 Zini 369: Visited this popular restaurant. Not quite used to the taste of sand onions, but the cold noodles were good. Bought some sea buckthorn bread on the way, chilled and delicious～ 🔹 Datong Museum: Free entry. Those who didn’t get climbing tickets online can buy on-site, afternoon tickets released at noon～Took a shuttle from the tourist center to the temple (10 minutes, 20 RMB round trip). Queued for over an hour to climb, spent about half an hour up there—not for the acrophobic! 🔹 Yingxian Wooden Pagoda: Ticket 50 RMB. Took the shuttle back to the tourist center at 3 PM. The direct bus to the pagoda had stopped (last bus around 1 PM), so took a taxi (shared ride 30 RMB). Check-in open 1 and a half hours in advance, so you don't have to arrive too early. There are three souvenir shops at the airport, but they are not big.

Day 1: Left Beijing early on the second day of Chinese New Year, taking the Beijing-Tibet Highway, which proved to be a mistake. The highway was congested everywhere, turning a 4-hour journey into 6 hours. Arrived at Datong Tulin Scenic Area at 2 PM. Tulin is a relatively new attraction with somewhat lacking facilities and scenery. Admission is 50 yuan with free parking. The tulin formations created from an ancient lakebed are quite distinctive with a prehistoric feel. It takes about 1.5 hours to explore. The drive from Tulin to Datong takes about 40 minutes. We stayed near Datong Railway Station, about 2 kilometers from the Ancient City. Around 6 PM, we went to see the Ancient City's night views. The Datong Lantern Festival in the Ancient City had beautiful lighting, with the southwest area being better than the north gate, especially around Huayan Temple where it was quite lively. There were performances at Prince Wang's Mansion. Other attractions like the Nine Dragon Screen, Huayan Temple, and Chunyang Palace were closed at night. The Ancient City was crowded with traffic jams, making taxis very inconvenient. Plan ahead. Day 2: Drove to the Hanging Temple early in the morning, about 80 kilometers taking 1.5 hours. Since we forgot to make reservations in advance, we couldn't get tickets to enter the Hanging Temple. Park admission is free, allowing for a close view of the entire temple from outside. The line to enter was quite long, so we were actually glad we didn't have to queue, as the wait would have been too long. From the Hanging Temple, we went to Mount Heng. February admission was free, with the cable car costing 70 yuan. It was wonderful hiking in the sunshine. The cable car station is quite a distance from both the temple complex and the summit. It would take about another hour to reach the peak, but with limited energy, we only went halfway up. The path was quite congested. The temple complex is impressive, representing the cultural heart of Mount Heng and its most representative area. Walking down took about 1 hour to reach the shuttle bus station, which costs 13 yuan per person to take you directly to the parking lot. Parking at Mount Heng is extremely difficult due to limited space. The backup parking lots are on dirt roads, costing 15 yuan per time. Returned to Datong around 5 PM. Day 3: Yungang Grottoes - absolutely stunning Buddhist cave sculptures that rekindled my desire to study Northern Wei history. Left before 8 AM for the 17-kilometer journey, but it was incredibly congested with too many visitors. Even the backup parking lots extended up small hills, and it took over an hour just to get out of the car. Each cave required queuing, but it was worth it. Every Buddha statue is exquisite, representing the highest craftsmanship of that era. However, the queuing was exhausting, so I recommend visiting during non-holiday periods to appreciate them properly. Admission is 100 yuan with free parking. We left around 2 PM to return to Datong Ancient City. The Ancient City was equally congested, and parking inside was extremely difficult - it's all about luck. First stop in the Ancient City was Huayan Temple, admission 50 yuan; Second stop was Chunyang Palace, free admission; Third stop was the Nine Dragon Screen, free admission; Fourth stop was Datong Ancient City Wall, free admission. We didn't visit the South City Wall, which reportedly has performances and charges admission. We were too tired to walk anymore. I especially recommend the Datong Ancient City Wall - it's the most complete, highest-standard, and most defensively robust city wall I've seen. The ancient towers gleamed in the sunset, telling the story of Datong's rich history. Day 4: Left Datong at 7:30 AM, heading straight for Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, 75 kilometers away, taking about 1.5 hours. Admission is 50 yuan with free parking. I strongly recommend the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda - photos don't do it justice. The majestic, awe-inspiring feeling can only be experienced in person standing before the pagoda. Only the first floor of the wooden pagoda is open to visitors. The sculptures are exquisite, and the lotus base-supporting generals are imposing and powerful with a proud demeanor. It takes about 1.5 hours to explore the wooden pagoda thoroughly, examining every detail without missing anything. From Yingxian Wooden Pagoda to Yanmen Pass is another 75 kilometers, but the mountain road was terribly congested, mainly because the scenic area has too few parking spaces and slow vehicle entry. I strongly condemn 👎 those who cut in line, driving in the opposite direction and cutting in at any time. Yanmen Pass has two gates at considerable height, equivalent to climbing the Badaling Great Wall, which is quite tiring - proceed according to your physical ability. Walking along this mighty pass, you can feel the hardships endured by garrison soldiers throughout the dynasties. It took about 2 hours, and we started our return journey around 4 PM. Datong is truly a wonderful place that I highly recommend. I'll definitely visit again when I have time.

In two days, we will depart from Shijiazhuang. The itinerary is as follows: Day 1: Ying County Wooden Tower and Datong Volcanic Complex, stay in Tianzhen County Day 2: Datong Great Wall Museum, drive on Great Wall Highway 1, return [Star] Ying County wooden pagoda There are many introductions online, there are many professional terms, laymen we go to see the general. From a distance, the wooden pagoda did not feel how tall, walking to see how insignificant people are, and how powerful people's wisdom is. The weather was good on the day we went, the swallows rose and fell, and the wooden pagoda complemented each other. Look for information that these swans do not nest in the wooden pagoda, but only peck at the worms of the wooden pagoda, supposedly known as the "guardian god" of the wooden pagoda. Originally, we also brought the freeze-drying program to feed the cats at Muta in Ying County, but there were so many people that not a single cat was seen. [Star] Datong Volcano Group Check the accommodation before you go, look at the prices to see how hot May Day will be. So considering the cost, intending to find a place to camp overnight in Datong, the Datong volcanic complex is one of the candidates. But it’s almost a month later than the season in Shijiazhuang, and the low temperature counts. The volcano complex is much less crowded than in the city, so we chose Wolf's Nest Mountain with wooden canyons for a casual walk. There are not many people, there is room for parking. The same volcano complex, Ulanqab's why so hot, we went during the pandemic when there were still very few people, later often saw the news of people overflowing. [Star] Great Wall Highway 1 The Datong Great Wall Museum is located near the Li Erkou Scenic Area on Highway 1 of the Great Wall. There are very few people who come to see it during the May Day holiday, and it is almost a chartered experience. The museum is mainly text-based, supplemented by 3D image data and 5D cinema, showing the historical changes of the Great Wall in Datong. The territory of Great Wall Highway 1 in Datong, bounded by Desheng Fort, is divided into the eastern and western sections. We started driving from Li Erkou in the eastern section and experienced a short section. It can be combined with destination navigation in the image, or viewing ground signs. The Ming Great Wall in Datong uses local materials, which are basically rammed earth structures. It feels particularly short from a distance, but once you get closer you can feel the majesty of the small mound. During this season, wolfsbane flowers even bloom. Rabbit holes are everywhere, big fat rabbits leap and stop on the Gobi, herders herd sheep at the foot of the Great Wall, the Great Wall at the top of the mountain is basically badly weathered, replaced by windmills, the grid of Unicom. A book I read recently, "From Dadu to Shangdu", mentioned many times the Longqing Peace Conference and the mutual trade between Han and Mongolia. Fort Desheng is one of the mutual markets. Historically the Great Wall was divided into two for defending against foreign races. But often at the foot of the Great Wall is the forefront of cultural and economic integration. Closing the door will inevitably poke through the window. This is probably the rule. For example, if you have the chance to visit, you will find that a Catholic church has been built in Bataizi on Highway 1 [Star] Other tips: Accommodation: Tianzhen County is about 1 hour from Datong city, suitable for self-driving Highway 1. Food and drink: When I went to Shanxi, the knife noodles automatically became better, just like the slab noodles only taste authentic in Shijiazhuang. Tickets: 50 dollars for adults at the wooden tower in Ying County, the rest of the attractions are free. Parking: At several places we visited, there were traffic police directing traffic and we could find parking spaces smoothly.

Yungang Grottoes + Ancient City Stroll Must-see attractions: Yungang Grottoes - A Millennium of Buddhist Art As one of the four major grottoes in China, the Buddha statues here are exquisitely carved, especially the Sakyamuni statue in Cave 5 and the open-air Buddha in Cave 20, which are truly awe-inspiring. It is recommended to rent an audio guide or hire a tour guide to gain an in-depth understanding of the Buddhist art of the Northern Wei Dynasty. Huayan Temple + Shanhua Temple Huayan Temple is representative of Liao-Jin architecture. The Great Buddha Hall is magnificent, and the Huayan Pagoda offers a panoramic view of the ancient city. Staying at the same hostel allows you to overlook Huayan Temple, making for beautiful photos. Shanhua Temple is quieter than Huayan Temple, with well-preserved Liao Dynasty wooden structures, perfect for slow appreciation. In the evening, you can see the golden ancient city. At sunset, rent a bicycle or walk along the Datong Ancient City Wall, which is 7 km long and offers a panoramic view of the ancient city. When the lights come on at night, the city walls become even more magnificent.

The tower is 67.31 meters high, the ground floor diameter is 30.27 meters, and the total weight is about 7,400 tons. It is the tallest and oldest existing solid wood structure pavilion building in the world. In September 2016, it was certified as the "world's tallest wooden tower" by the Guinness World Records. The wooden pagoda of Yingxian County is stable and dignified, well-proportioned and has a beautiful outline. In ancient books, it is called "the beauty of the floating map, and the first one in the universe". Ying County Wooden Pagoda is located in the Buddhist temple in the northwest corner of the old city of Ying County, Shanxi Province. It is the main building of the temple. The Buddha Palace Temple faces north and south, covering an area of about 25,000 square meters. The whole central axis is prominent. From south to north, there are Shanmen, Shakyamuni Pagoda and Daxiong Hall. Shakyamuni Pagoda is located in the center of the temple, followed by Daxiong Hall. The Bell and Drum Tower is located on the east and west sides of the front of the temple and was built in the Ming Dynasty. The main body of the wooden tower is made of North China larch, and the arch is made of elm. The wood consumption is as high as tens of thousands of cubic meters. The whole building consists of three parts: the tower base, the tower body and the tower. The tower base is divided into upper and lower floors. The lower floor is square, and the upper layer is octagonal. The tower is octagonal, with five layers and six eaves in appearance, but it is actually a four-nine-story tower with five bright and dark. The tower is composed of a base, a lotus, a phase wheel, a round light, an eye, a treasure cover and a pearl, which is cleverly made and integrated with the tower. There are 59 different forms and hundreds of arches above and below the whole tower (the arches can not only share the weight of the pillars, but also buffer and disperse external forces), just like blooming lotus flowers decorated all over the tower. There are many kinds in China and are known as the "Arch Museum". Ancient books praise it as "Optimus Prime from a distance, similar to a hundred-foot lotus". In terms of structure, the design of the Yingxian wooden tower is more ingenious. #MarchGoodPlaces2025 That day I came to Shanxi Province and visited the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda in Ying County, Shuozhou City, an ancient building known as the "Yingxian Fogong Temple Sakyamuni Pagoda". The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is one of the oldest and tallest pure wooden structure pavilion-style buildings in the world. It was built in the second year of Qingning during the reign of Emperor Dao Zong of the Liao Dynasty in 1056 AD, and has a long history of 950 years. This wooden tower was built under the supervision of Empress Dowager Xiao. At first, people were curious about why the tower was built here. One theory is that it was to highlight the status of imperial power, while another theory is that it was out of strategic needs, as this was once an ancient battlefield and building a tower could be used to defend against enemy invasions. There is also a legend that it is to pray for disaster relief and to put an end to the war. Whatever the reason, the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, as a Buddhist pagoda, can perhaps be most reasonably explained as promoting Buddhism. The wooden tower is 67.31 meters high, with an octagonal plane and a bottom floor diameter of 30.27 meters. It stands majestically on a 4-meter-high square stone base. There are spiritual beasts surrounding the tower. Standing on the south platform of the base, there are several stones in front of you, including "Yunhan Stone", "Bagua Stone" and "Meteorite". Each stone has a legend, adding more mystery to the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda. For example, the long white line in the center of the "Yunhan Stone" is said to be the trace of excavation of the foundation, and the "Bagua Stone" is engraved with the Bagua diagram, which is said to be a relic of the Liao Dynasty. There is also a "meteorite" story that explains that it fell from the sky after the tower was built, foreshadowing the auspicious completion of the tower. The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is not only magnificent in architecture, but also has a fascinating legend behind each stone, adding more mystery to this magical wooden pagoda. In the public's stereotype, Shanxi seems to be all about coal. But for lovers of ancient architecture, this is an absolute mecca. Shanxi silently tells of its glorious past with its architectural relics that have been preserved for thousands of years. During my 7-day trip in Shanxi, I deeply felt that even without rushing, just exploring one city can be very rewarding. No other province in the country has such a wealth of above-ground cultural relics as Shanxi. There are as many as 28,027 ancient buildings here, accounting for 10% of the country's total. Each one has witnessed the vicissitudes of time and is touching. Below, I will share with you the treasure attractions I discovered during my trip to Shanxi. ❶ Yingxian Wooden Pagoda: It is the tallest and oldest wooden pagoda in the world. After thousands of years of wind, rain, and war, it still stands proudly. Looking up at the wooden pagoda, its majestic momentum rushes towards you, making you marvel at the wisdom and skills of the ancients. ❷ Pure Land Temple: This small temple next to the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is often overlooked by tourists, but the exquisiteness of its caisson ceiling is comparable to that of the Forbidden City. The shape is elegant, the conception is ingenious, and the structure is exquisite. Every detail is worth savoring. ❸ Gwangseong Temple: The "Three Wonders of Gwangseong" - the Feihong Pagoda, the Zhaocheng Jin Tripitaka, and the Yuan Dynasty mural Water God Temple, are well-known. Among them, the Feihong Pagoda is recognized by the World Record as the tallest colorful glazed pagoda with its unique shape and colorful glaze, which is dazzling and shocking. ❹ Datong Ancient City: This is an ancient city full of life. Although it has gone through the changes of the times, a large number of ancient buildings are still well preserved in the city. There are temples, Taoist temples, pavilions, etc. Each place carries a profound history and culture. ❺ Huayan Temple: As one of the three existing Liao Dynasty temples in China, Huayan Temple is not only magnificent in architecture, but also the colored sculptures and murals in the temple are extremely precious and of great artistic value, and are worth visiting. ❻ Yungang Grottoes: A large grotto complex from the Northern Wei Dynasty. The Buddha statues in the grottoes are lifelike, either solemn or humorous. Walking into each cave, it seems that you can travel through time and space and feel the ancients' persistence and pursuit of art. ❼ Wang Family Compound: As the saying goes, "No need to see other courtyards after visiting the Wang Family Compound". As a typical representative of Jin merchant residences and Jin-style architecture, the Wang Family Compound is large in scale and rigorous in layout. It is known as the "Folk Forbidden City of China" and the "Forbidden City of Shanxi". ❽ Jinci Temple: It is the oldest existing royal sacrificial garden in China and the ancestral hall of the Jin State. The "Three Wonders of Jinci" - the Difficult Old Spring, the Maid Statue, and the Zhou Cypress are well-known. In addition, the Shengmu Hall, the wood-carved dragon, and the Fish Marsh Flying Bridge also demonstrate the superb skills of the ancients. ❾ Twin Pagoda Temple: The tallest ancient building in Taiyuan City, the twin pagodas of Yongzuo Temple are like a pair of twin sisters, complementing each other and standing majestically, which is very beautiful. ❿ Little West Heaven: The full hall of painted sculptures in Xiaoxitian Hall in Xi County is known as the "Suspended Sculpture Masterpiece" in the history of Chinese sculpture art. Numerous colored sculptures are lifelike and exquisitely crafted, which is amazing. ⓫ Guanyin Hall: Although the Guanyin Hall is small in area, it is covered with about 500 clay colored sculptures and suspended sculptures, integrating the elements of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, reflecting the harmonious coexistence of diverse cultures. ⓬ Shuanglin Temple: Shuanglin Temple, located in Pingyao County, is famous for its colored sculptures and enjoys the reputation of "Oriental Colored Sculpture Art Treasury". The Thousand-Hand Guanyin and "The World's No. 1 Wei Tuo" colored sculptures in the temple are rare art treasures.

Know a city because of a pagoda, and enter a city because of a pagoda. This city is today's Yingxian County, Yingzhou in the Liao Dynasty. There are no high-rise buildings in Yingxian County, and the skyline of thousands of years is still preserved. The famous Sakyamuni Wooden Pagoda stands majestically in the center of the ancient city, just like the words "Heavenly Pillar and Earth Axis" written on a plaque. The nearly 70-meter-high wooden pagoda was built in the second year of Qingning in the Liao Dynasty (1056 AD) and is the oldest and tallest wooden pagoda in the world. The body of the wooden pagoda is as towering as a heavenly palace, with a total of 54 kinds of Dougong from top to bottom. It took craftsmen 140 years to assemble this tallest "building block". It has been admired for thousands of years. It is composed of five stories and six eaves. At a glance, it is a thousand years of light and shadow overlapping, which can be described as the pinnacle of Chinese Dougong. "The palaces of Luonan are all gone, and a pagoda hangs in the blue sky." The vicissitudes of life, history is renewed, the majesty of the wooden pagoda, the magic of the wooden pagoda, and the magnificence of the wooden pagoda have already ennobled time and amazed the past and present. The plaques of different eras on the tower are unique and exquisite, which makes people sigh at the charm of Chinese calligraphy. The wooden pagoda has experienced more than 40 earthquakes, more than 200 artillery attacks, and the blowing of the north wind in Yanbei, and has steadily walked for nearly a thousand years. The architectural master Liang Sicheng sighed affectionately: "This pagoda is so good that it is amazing, so good that I can't breathe for a long time." Now it is tilted due to human reasons, but its tenacity and the sense of history are still shocking. The wooden pagoda is even more spectacular at sunset. Flocks of pigeons fly around the pagoda on the Dougong beams, bringing joy to tourists and injecting vigorous vitality into the ancient wooden pagoda.
