Daytime Delight: A Sommarøy Sojourn
#summervacay
Spending the day in Sommarøy felt like stumbling into a hidden Arctic paradise—pristine white-sand beaches glimmering under the gentle northern daylight, and crystal-clear waters so luminous they looked borrowed from a tropical island. We drove along winding coastal roads flanked by mountains and fjords until we reached the village, where charming red cabins dotted the shoreline like friendly punctuation marks against the blue horizon. Walking barefoot on cool sand and dipping our toes into the chilly sea, I couldn’t help but feel exhilarated—this was nature at its most refreshing and unexpectedly vibrant.
We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring hidden coves, peering into tidal pools teeming with miniature sea life, and letting our imaginations run wild building little sandcastle kingdoms. With the sky endless blue above and the sound of gentle waves for company, every moment felt both peaceful and full of discovery. Sommarøy’s daytime charm showed that you don’t need fancy gear to find magic—sometimes, all you need is sand between your toes and a dose of Arctic sunshine.

🏖️ Must-do list
Highly recommend joining a one-day tour from Tromsø to experience Sommarøy. The journey takes about two hours from the city center, and along the way, our shuttle bus made several quick stops. 🚌 The tour guide would introduce you about the history / interesting facts of that spot, and give you enough time to take photos and explore around the place. ✨
At the last stop, we arrived the seaside where BBQ was prepared, surrounded by the stunning landscape. 🍗Hot chocolate 🍫 and snacks, like marshmallows and iconic Norwegian brown cheese paired with biscuits. It was a comforting treat amidst the awe-inspiring views.
Sommarøy is definitely a must-visit for anyone seeking adventure and beauty in the Land of the Midnight Sun! ☀️

Chasing the Northern Lights: The Ultimate Tromsø Guide
"Will we see the aurora tonight?" This is the burning question for every traveler visiting Tromsø. As the city with a 90% success rate for northern lights sightings within the Arctic Circle, we've combined meteorological science with ancient Sami wisdom to create this exclusive aurora-chasing guide.
🌌 The Triple Rule of Aurora Forecasting (Scientific Edition)
1. Key Indicators Monitoring
KP Index: ≥3 is observable (Tromsø often visible at KP1-2)
Cloud Coverage: Check real-time cloud maps via Yr.no APP (select "Satellite Cloud" layer)
Solar Wind Speed: >600km/s means active auroras (refer to SpaceWeatherLive)
2. Golden Observation Window
🕘 21:00-02:00 (especially watch for bursts around 23:30)
3. Magnetic Field Mystery
🔮 Sami proverb: "When the Big Dipper's handle points to the moon, the Aurora Goddess dances" (field-tested!)
📍 Top 5 Aurora Viewing Spots Rating
Location | Advantages | Disadvantages | Ideal For | Transport
Ersfjordbotn Fjord | Aurora reflections on water | Requires car | Photographers | 25min drive
Prestvannet Lake | Walkable from downtown | Light pollution | Car-free travelers | 1km from center
Sommarøy Beach | Aurora + blue ice combo | Remote location | Adventurers | 1h drive
Telegrafbukta Park | Seaside auroras | Windy | Couples | Bus #24
Aurora Camp Forest | Sami cultural experience | Requires tour booking | Culture lovers | Guided tour
Personal recommendation: Fjord spots!

- Shutter: 4-15s (shorter when KP is high)
- Focus: Manual infinity
Phone tips:
- Use NightCap APP (iOS)
- Clip to thermos for stability
🧤 Aurora Hunter's Gear List
Warmth: Electric socks (ThermoHeat recommended) + ski mask
Pro tip: Hand warmers on phone back (prevents cold shutdown)
Mystical: Chocolate (Sami believe sweets attract auroras)
🍵 Survival Guide While Waiting
Aurora alarm: Download Aurora Alerts APP for vibration alerts
Warm shelters:
Fjellstua Café (cable car station)
Rorbua Pub (offers aurora wake-up service)

Dreamy northern lights
During this trip the arctic weather was quite an experience with beautiful white powdery snow! it was a challenge to catch the northern lights due to the clouds but in the end we were successful!
The activities and tours, visiting reindeer, Sommaroy island and petting the Alaskan huskies. When the weather gave us a break, the landscape and colors were truly mind-blowing.

Travel checklist: 🧳
📞 You must bring a phone card, which is convenient for surfing the Internet and receiving text messages. O2 has a good signal.
🔌 When traveling, don’t forget the plug converter. Norway uses European standard plugs with two round heads.
👚 It’s chilly in Norway in January, so you need to prepare thick down jackets, thermal underwear, and waterproof snow boots so you can play in the ice and snow without getting wet.
(Note: Due to word limit, the following is supplementary content)
🎫 Documents are also important. Check your passport, visa, and air tickets carefully so that you can travel without worries.
🔋 Chargers and power banks keep you charged anytime and anywhere, so you don’t have to worry about running out of power when taking photos.
Don’t forget these essentials to make your trip to Norway smoother! 🌟

Polar night in Sommarøy (Norway)
One day before the winter solstice we visited Sommarøy, an amazing archipelago about 60 km west far from Tromsø. During the summer this place is a paradise and people usually eat on their beaches.

Somaroy Island, Arctic Region, Norway
Somaroi is under the jurisdiction of Tromso, a city in the Arctic region of Norway. It is an ancient fishing village extending to the Norwegian Sea with an area of only 0.34 square kilometers and a population of about 320 people. There are many fishing fleets and abundant fish in the area. Processing and other industries.
The fishing village consists of three islands, from west to east: Shilsoy, Somaroy and Stow Somaroy. It has become a popular tourist destination because of its white sandy beaches and unique scenery. Winter is the most popular. One of the best aurora observation points, which is why I like to stay here for one night when I am in Tromso in winter, because there is less light pollution here than Tromso, especially in Hillesøy facing Norway. There is almost no light pollution in the direction of the sea.
The original settlement of the fishing village was on the westernmost island of Hillesoy, where there is the ancient Church of Hillesoy. Since the Middle Ages, this place has been the location of churches of all ages. At the end of the 19th century, the church was moved to the Brenthol Gate on Kvar Island. It was not until around 1900 that the main center of the village was moved to Somaroy Island. #Overseas travel #Norway travel #Norway travel #Norwegian scenery #Arctic trip #Arctic circle #Northern lights #Ice and snow fantasy #Seascape #Island vacation #norway #arctic #aurora

Tromso-Som
Tromso-Sommary is 60 km from Tromso. Compared to the city, the terrain is more open and there is almost no light pollution. It is more suitable for viewing aurora. The magic of Aurora lies in its transformation. There are no two identical aurora, so every photo left in the camera is never the same. At the moment the shutter is pressed, no one can predict what it will eventually stay on the film. It is also here that the prediction of the intensity of aurora is generally divided into 9 levels. The level below 3 is generally invisible to the naked eye, the green light can be seen in the 3-5 level, and the colored aurora can be seen in the 5th level or higher. . After experiencing a 7-level aurora explosion, I have been completely immersed in the aurora, and all the torments that are waiting in the darkness and the cold are dying in the moment that it dances in the night sky. I fired, lit the lights, and drove under the sky of aurora, which was the feeling that I could never experience in the bustling city.
