Beautiful sunset in the north of Morocco

On a recent 3 day trip to Morocco I took a tour to some of the most popular tourist hotspots around Tangier and stopped off for an hour at Cap Spartel. Located 14 km west of Tangier, Cap Spartel , also known as Cap Ampelusium or Cape of Vines, stands over 315 meters above sea level at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar,this renowned cape offers a stunning viewpoint dominating the junction where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. Cap Spartel withstands the relentless force of the seas, symbolising Morocco’s dignified resilience, and is steeped in myth and legend. It is the northwesternmost point of the African continent and below the cape are the Caves of Hercules. Home to Morocco’s oldest lighthouse, the Cap Spartel Promontory features this over 150 year old beacon. The Lighthouse, firmly anchored to the rocks with a tower stretching skyward, stands 25 meters tall from the ground and 95 meters above sea level, serving as a steadfast guardian against the elements. You can climb the spiral staircase and delve into the sites history, from its inception to the present day. At the summit, you can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree view of the surroundings and observe cargo ships navigating the Strait of Gibraltar. I had a very brief but nice time here and if you don’t want to pay the entrance fee into Cap Spartel Park and Lighthouse , there is also a nice restaurant and gift shop, I did the latter, as i only had an hour being on an organised tour, it’s worth more time and I would definitely like to visit again and have a full day there to explore. Opening times- Monday-Sunday 8.30AM-11.30PM Admission for foreign visitors to the Museum, Park and Lighthouse is 50 Dirham (about £4.00) (€5.40)

For lunch, I found a cozy spot serving traditional Moroccan dishes—a hearty tagine with fresh bread, followed by a glass of refreshing mint tea. Sitting in the heart of the old city, watching the world go by, was the perfect way to soak in Tangier’s atmosphere. Hercules Cave – A Legendary Spot After lunch, I headed to the famous Hercules Cave, a site steeped in mythology. Legend says that Hercules rested here after completing his 12 labors, and the cave’s opening, shaped like the African continent, makes it even more special. Standing inside, with the waves crashing against the rocks, I felt the deep connection between nature and history. Signpost of the Atlantic and Mediterranean One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the exact point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. There’s a signpost marking the spot, a simple yet powerful reminder of Tangier’s strategic location. Standing there, with the two seas blending into each other, was a surreal experience. Cap Spartel – A View Like No Other To end the day, I made my way to Cap Spartel, a stunning lighthouse perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic. The view was breathtaking—endless blue waters stretching into the horizon, with the golden light of the setting sun making it even more magical. Final Thoughts Tangier is a city of contrasts—where ancient traditions meet modern influences, and where two seas embrace. Cape Spartel is a landmark on the southern shore of the Strait of Gibraltar. It is located on the Cape Spartel Peninsula in Morocco and is the dividing point between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Cape Spartel is not only an important geographical landmark, but also has important strategic significance in history, as it controls the sea route from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean. The Cape Spartel Peninsula itself is also a tourist destination with rich natural landscapes and historical sites. Visitors can enjoy the magnificent coastline, visit ancient castles and historical sites, and experience unique culture and scenery. There is a beautiful lighthouse here, also known as the Cape Spartel Lighthouse, located at the entrance of the Strait of Gibraltar, 12 km west of Tangier. This is the western point of the northern end of the African continent. The lighthouse faces the vast ocean, and its tall tower is clearly visible from a distance. At night, the lights on the top of the tower are bright, and passing ships adjust their course accordingly. Visitors always take photos with the lighthouse as the background. Standing here, you can basically identify the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Mediterranean Sea to the east. In clear weather, you may even see Spain from the top of the tower. The lighthouse is open to the public, and the souvenir stalls under the tower and the nearby coffee bar also attract visitors to stay for a while. ⏳Visiting time: Tickets are required for admission, priced at MAD 50, and the visiting time is 30 minutes to 1 hour.
