Tumen can be a check-in point when you play in Yanji. It only takes 15 minutes to take the high-speed train from Yanji West Station to Tumen North Station. Looking to tick off a bucket list item for some of the more dark hearted tourists, myself and a few friends went to Tumen. It’s a very small town in China which sits on the Tumen river and looks across to North Korea. There’s a strong police and military presence and hosts a border control office along the bridge that links the two nations together. The hotel we stayed at, Tumen Bali Fashion Hotel, was a great stay. The host was friendly and very excited to see some foreigners. We arrived relatively late at night and hadn’t eaten but he was able to help guide us to a dumpling restaurant. Props to the adorable puppies there! We were visited by police when we checked in just to ask some standard security questions but this wasn’t a problem and the police spoke surprisingly good English. You may be able to walk around the park on the river but you must be very mindful and can’t take any photos looking directly into North Korea. Any foreigners found doing so will be asked to delete their photos and be questioned for their purpose in Tumen. I definitely recommend it for anyone wanting to get a glimpse of North Korea but I urge everyone to just take care with their actions. #travel #china #tumen #northkorea

#AprilTravelSupport A few days ago, I left for Yanji, China to go on a trip to Baekdu Mountain with my parents. I was able to see North Korea from the Chinese side of China, where the border between China and North Korea is drawn across the Tumen River. Then, on the second day, I went to Yongjeong, where I was able to find historical relics from the Goguryeo and Balhae periods at the birthplace of poet Yun Dong-ju and the Yanbian Museum. I also bought some interesting North Korean products, and I was able to see North Korean-related relics at the museum. I was able to meet many Koreans, and it was so different from the feeling of meeting Koreans in Korea. I felt like I was seeing our compatriots in a foreign land. From Yanji, I took a day tour van to the Duman River and went around the Duman Riverside Park to see the Duman River bordering North Korea. It was shallow and narrow. From Duman River Park, I took a van to Yongjeong and there was the birthplace of poet Yun Dong-ju and Myeongdong School, which was established in the early 20th century to instill the spirit of anti-Japanese struggle in students at the Yongjeong Independence Base in North Gando and raise them to be independent patriots. The Tumen River in July was shimmering with muddy yellow waves, like a sleeping dragon winding along the Sino-North Korean border. Standing in front of the No. 86 boundary marker, I truly felt the abstract concept of "national border" for the first time - three steps ahead were the gray-white houses in Nanyang, North Korea, and five steps back were the red slogan wall in Tumen City, China.
