The small exterior looks like a hanok or a traditional Japanese house, so I was drawn in without thinking as I passed by. The interior of the library was wider and warmer than I thought! The interior had a wooden feel, the soft lighting, and the local residents quietly reading books, so it was full of a comfortable atmosphere. Above all, there were many spaces where travelers could sit and rest freely, so it was perfect for stopping by during a light walk. Most of the books are in Japanese, but the tourist information materials and exhibits related to local history were well organized, so it was fun to look around. I was able to get a town map and information on famous cherry blossom spots, which was very useful. A space where you can take a short break and get a glimpse of the local daily life. The Uchiko Library Information Center is a quiet place that is different from the noisy tourist destinations. If you walk a little from the busy street, you will come across a quiet hillside road lined with trees, and this shrine is right at the end of it. There is an old *torii (鳥居)* at the entrance, and the sunlight shining through it and the shadows of the trees were really impressive. If you go up the short stairs, you will come to the main shrine. The area is quiet and there are not many people, so it feels like time has stopped. The shrine is not large, but it is a space where historical tranquility and the unique Japanese neatness are alive. The main shrine building made of wood, the ema (wish cards) fluttering in the wind, and the elderly people in the neighborhood praying quietly… It was a really good place to sit down for a while and calm your mind. Especially in spring, the cherry blossoms around the shrine are said to be in full bloom, so I definitely want to go back there next time. It is a Buddhist temple located about an hour away from Matsuyama by car, and it is a small Buddhist temple nestled in a quiet rural village. It looks ordinary from the outside, but the traditional tiled roof and the quiet scenery of the grounds were really impressive. As you can see in the picture, the temple architecture has a strong Edo period atmosphere, and the mountains and sky spread out to the side blend together to create a truly picturesque scene. When I visited, the leaves were just starting to change color, so the colorful leaves and the quiet temple scenery went really well together. There was actually a temple bell under the bell tower, and since there weren't many visitors, it was nice to stay quietly. The house has now been converted into a wood wax museum and exhibition hall, which uses models and videos to explain the production process of wood wax in an easy-to-understand way. It's a small place, but it's crowded with many cherry blossom viewers when it's in full bloom. It usually reaches its peak from late March to early April. The weeping cherry trees lined the river, stretching their branches out, creating a space that looked like a cherry blossom tunnel. The long branches of the weeping cherry trees hang down over the river, creating a scene that looks like a cherry blossom curtain swaying in the wind. As I walked, the branches stretched out so close that I felt like I could reach out and touch the flowers, which was also fascinating. What was particularly impressive was the feeling that I was surrounded by cherry blossoms wherever I looked. As soon as I arrived at the station, an old steam locomotive was on display, adding to the atmosphere. I took pictures of the wonderful train that reminded me of the past, and started my trip. 📸 Koshōji – A very beautiful temple One of the places that impressed me the most in Uchiko was Koshōji. It was a really beautiful temple, and the quiet atmosphere made me feel calm. Walking through the old streets – a quiet traditional Japanese street If you go down the hill from Koshōji, you will come across a street full of old atmosphere. It was fun just walking around because there were buildings that still had the feel of the Edo period. There were also many craft shops and traditional sweets shops, so it was fun to look around! Kamihiga Mansion – A Quaint Japanese Mansion Kamihiga Mansion, which you can find on the old street, is a place where you can truly feel the beauty of a traditional Japanese house. There is a Japanese garden inside, so it was very charming. It was interesting to see the old Japanese mansion while looking around the space that has traces of time. Uchiko Kabuki Theater – Watching a traditional kabuki performance The last course is Uchiko’s famous place, Uchiko Kabuki Theater! This is a traditional theater built in 1916, and kabuki performances are still held here. Uchiko was a town that prospered from the late Edo period to the Taisho period through the production of wood wax. The streets of Yokaichi and Gokoku still retain a strong trace of that time. Traditional townhouses and wealthy merchants' mansions stand side by side along the 600m street, just as they were back then. If you take a leisurely stroll, you'll notice the pale yellow earthen walls. These walls are made from local soil. As the name "Yoto" (=lamp) suggests, this shop carries a large number of oil lamps and vintage lanterns. Other attractive items on offer include custom Opinel lamps made by craftsmen, fire pits, and tables. 📍Karari Bridge On the way to the roadside station Fresh Park Karari, about 1 km from Uchiko city center, there is a bridge over a tributary of the Oda River called Karari Bridge. It is a pedestrian-only suspension bridge, suspended by wires from an iron bridge. The suspension bridge over the river is very picturesque, and the view from the river when crossing the bridge is also nice. There were hardly any people using it, so I enjoyed the view at my own pace. On the way back, I bought some seasonal fruits at the roadside station Fresh Park Karari. 📍Soba Restaurant Shimohagatei Renovated from the former Shimohagatei, this popular restaurant has a great atmosphere. When I went in just after 11am on a Sunday, there were still seats available, but it soon filled up. It took a while for the food to be served, but it was a lovely restaurant, with fresh flowers on the meal trays. The gallery on the second floor was also worth seeing. The building was built in the mid-Meiji period and is a registered tangible cultural property, so the building itself is worth seeing, and you can freely tour the second floor. The soba itself is delicious, but the portions are also generous, and the thoughtful touch of a flower being garnished with each bowl makes this a lovely restaurant. #FreeHotelStay
