Huizhou Hongsheng Ancient Temple: A Journey to Explore Its Mysteries

Located in Shangzhong Village, Pinghai Town, Huidong, Huizhou Hongsheng Ancient Temple is a shrine dedicated to the salt industry’s patron deity, worshipped by salt workers from the freshwater salt fields. Every year on the 24th day of the fourth lunar month, the deity’s birthday is celebrated with donations and rituals from the salt workers. The temple was originally built during the Ming Dynasty, though the exact year remains uncertain. It underwent renovations during the late Daoguang period (before 1850) and in the 10th year of Guangxu (1884). Inside the temple, Hongsheng Dawang is worshipped, alongside deities such as Jin Hua Furen, Tai Sui, and Bao Gong. Outside the temple, there are altars for Sheji and Master Lu Ban. The stone railings and steps in front of the temple have stood for centuries, and the inscriptions above the entrance commemorate renovations in the 10th year of Xianfeng (1860) and the 6th year of Tongzhi (1867), showcasing its ancient and solemn charm. Although the statues and altars inside have been dismantled, and the side walls are severely eroded with damaged eaves and tiles, the temple still exudes a sense of profound history and the fishermen’s devout prayers.
