From Langzhong to Zhaohua: A Journey Through Millennia of Shu Han History

Known as Jiameng in ancient times, this town holds profound historical significance. In 221 AD, the first year of the Shu Han Zhangwu era, Liu Bei established the Shu Han regime in Chengdu, and Jiameng Zhaohua became the "dragon-rising land" of the Shu Han dynasty. Since then, it has been revered as the "Second Capital of Shu," carrying immense historical weight. Notably, the chancellor's residence of Fei Yi, the third chancellor of Shu Han, and the general's mansion of Jiang Wei were both located within Zhaohua Ancient Town. Even Zhuge Liang's northern expedition headquarters during his six campaigns out of Qishan was based here. These historical events have made the town's legacy even more illustrious. Upon arriving in Zhaohua at noon, I had to park at the visitor center's lot. Carrying my bags under the scorching sun, I was drenched in sweat within minutes, desperate to find a place to settle. Fortunately, I found a homestay called Gu Family Courtyard. Stepping into this 400-year-old courtyard, I was instantly captivated by its serene ambiance. The moment I entered, it felt like stepping back in time, surrounded by an overwhelming sense of history. After settling in, I took a quick shower to wash off the stickiness. Just as I was about to explore the town, rain began to fall unexpectedly. The downpour was a welcome relief, cooling the sweltering air and dropping the temperature to a pleasant 23°C. With an umbrella in hand, I strolled through the ancient streets, listening to the rhythmic patter of raindrops on old eaves. The millennium-old stone paths formed shallow puddles, each drop creating tiny splashes. Under the city gate, people gathered to take shelter, chatting or quietly admiring the rain-drenched town—each moment telling a story of its enduring past.
