The "Church of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistkirche)" located in the center of the city is the largest church in Heidelberg. It was built at the end of the 14th century as a burial site for the Elector Palatine. Throughout its history, the Church of the Holy Spirit has been used as a place of worship for both Catholic and Protestant congregations. Since 1936, it has officially been a Protestant church. Facing the Market Square (Marktplatz), the City Hall stands prominently. This is where the Christmas Market was held. "Karl Theodor Bridge (Old Bridge)" In the 12th to 13th centuries, the first stone bridge was built across the Neckar River, but it was repeatedly destroyed by floods and wars. It was rebuilt in 1788 and named after the Elector Karl Theodor of the time. This beautiful arch bridge spanning the Neckar River plays a vital role in connecting Heidelberg Castle and the Old Town. The "Bridge Monkey" bronze statue is a popular attraction. The original was a relief of a monkey carved into the gate on the north side of the old bridge. At the center of Kornmarkt (Grain Square), the "Madonna Statue" was reportedly created for the purpose of promoting Catholicism.
