To commemorate the end of this terrible epidemic, the Senate passed a resolution to build a church to give thanks. It was planned and designed by architect Palladio on Giudecca Island opposite St. Mark's Square. It also stipulated that all officials of the Republic would make a pilgrimage to the church to pay tribute on the Day of the Redeemer in July every year. Since then, a unique common people's Thanksgiving Day was created in the maritime city of Venice - thanking God for his mercy and giving Venice a new life. Therefore, on the third weekend of July every year, a floating bridge will cross the more than 100-meter-long canal from the drifting wooden pier Zattere introduced last time to the Church of the Redeemer. The city is decorated with lights and even large and small boats are shuttling on the water. The residents of Venice will have dinner on the boat or on the shore and watch the fireworks display about 30 minutes before midnight. This is usually a hot midsummer night dinner, and there are often thunderstorms in the middle of the night after the fireworks. This year the celebration will be held on the evening of July 16, and the city government is still using the epidemic as an excuse to control the number of people attending by appointment. This is one of the most important festivals in the capital of the bygone republic, and there are of course menus corresponding to the season. Pickled onion sardines, bean noodle soup, garlic snails, and anchovy and onion noodles are the most common common dishes. Of course, the finale of iced watermelon is also one of the must-haves to accompany the colorful fireworks flashing in the dark. I still remember that when I was a student, I would always go to the Rialto Fish Market every other day to eat free watermelons!
