Situated among the temple cluster in Ichijoji, Shisendo is well-known yet quieter and more serene compared to the temples in the Higashiyama area. Shisendo was built by Ishikawa Jozan, a samurai, scholar of Chinese classics, and landscape designer, as a secluded retreat. The "Room of Poets" is adorned with portraits of ancient Chinese poets, which is how Shisendo earned its name.
