#JapanTravelTactics Osorezan, located in Mutsu City on the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture, is one of the three most sacred mountains in Japan, along with Mount Hiei and Mount Koya. In this area, it is said that "when a person dies, their soul goes to the mountain (Osorezan)." The sacred site, surrounded by the outer rim of the mountain, cannot be seen from the outside. If you enter the sacred area by crossing the drum bridge over the Sanzu River (currently closed to traffic), you will see scenery reminiscent of the afterlife, including Jigokudani, where the smell of sulfur hangs in the air, and Muken Jigoku, where hell is incessant. Beyond that, the beautiful Gokurakuhama beach, reminiscent of the Pure Land, awaits. Osorezan Bodaiji Temple was founded in 862. It is said that Jikaku Daishi Ennin was guided by a revelation in a dream and founded the temple. Mount Osorezan is also said to have erupted more than 10,000 years ago, and hot springs with a sulfur smell still bubble up today.
