We had hoped that by the time we reached Oshino Hakkai, Mt. Fuji might finally peek out from behind the clouds. But no — Fuji remained elusive, hidden beneath layers of mist and low skies. It was a little disappointing, sure — especially knowing how stunning the view from here can be on a clear day. But somehow, it also made the village feel even more intimate. Like nature was asking us to slow down, notice the smaller things: the way the water ripples in the springs, the sounds of footsteps on gravel, the quiet steam rising from grilled mochi. Even without the mountain towering above us, Fuji’s presence was still felt — in the water, in the air, in the reverence with which locals spoke of it. Like a sleeping giant just beyond the veil.
